On February 4th 1912 Franz Reichelt threw himself from the Eiffel tower in a suit designed to make him soar. It did not. His attempt failed and he died on impact. Today The Bird Man suit exists as gear you can actually buy to make you flying dreams come true (and it kills about 20 lives each year).
